A selection of photographer Shane Sato’s powerful portraits of Japanese American veterans of World War II are showcased in The Joe W. & Dorothy D. Brown Foundation Special Exhibit Gallery through March 31, 2024. Supplemented with artifacts and oral histories from the Museum’s collection, The Go for Broke Spirit: Legacy in Portraits explores the selfless service, profound patriotism, and enduring legacy of the Japanese American men and women who persevered in the face of prejudice and incarceration and risked their lives to advance the Allied effort.

Shane Sato, based in Los Angeles, has been a photographer for the past 30 years. He started shooting portraits of Japanese American WWII Nisei veterans in 1999, culminating in the coffee table book set, The Go For Broke Spirit. We will meet in the main lobby of the Museum at 10:00am, tour the exhibit, then have a no-host lunch from 11:30am-1:30pm at the American Sector Restaurant featuring a Zoom meeting with special guest Shane Sato who will answer questions and share more about the exhibit. Budget around $20 per person for lunch.  After lunch, your ticket will give you access to visit the rest of the Museum on your own.
