Ikebana Workshop

  • Sat, November 18, 2023
  • 10:00 - 12:00
  • Lakeview Presbyterian Church, 5914 Canal Blvd, NOLA

Ikebana is a way of arranging flowers that was developed by the Japanese. It was introduced in Japan in the sixth century by Chinese Buddhist missionaries, who had formalized the ritual of offering flowers to Buddha. The art is based on the harmony of simple linear constructions and the appreciation of the subtle beauty of flowers and natural material, such as branches and stems.

Learn the history and technique of Ikebana as you make an arrangement with instructor Richard Cranford.  This exclusive workshop is offered to members of Japan Society with openings for non-members if space is available.

Richard will have a selection of containers and kenzans (frog or needle point fasteners) which you may use for the class or purchase.  There are two types of containers in basic arrangements, nageire and moribana.  Nageire is the tall, often cylindrical shaped container and moribana is the low flat bowl.  We will be doing the moribana style which is easier because the kenzan allows for much easier manipulation of the line material.   This may sound unfamiliar and that’s just what we will learn in this hands-on workshop.

The costs are $25. which covers the instructor and the flowers.  Non-members will pay $30.00.  You will need to purchase the container and kenzan directly from Richard or just use one for the class which you will not be able to take with you.  You may bring your own if it is the appropriate size and style.
