    Thursday, September 28th, 2017 Meeting

Now that we know the parts of our body in Japanese we'll play a more interactive and competitive game to test our knowledge. We'll be split off into two teams, and whoever gets the most right have bragging rights.

After our game, we'll have a guest speak from the JET program to come speak with us about the amazing opportunities you can have with JET as a Teaching Assistant in Japan.

    About Nihongo Renshuu

Nihongo Renshuu, or Japanese practice, is a casual learning experience for people wanting to learn Japanese. It’s easy to grab material to study but not so easy when it comes to practicing what you’ve studied. This program is for all Japanese learning levels, from beginner to expert. The reason for the large gap is how this program is formatted. Nihongo Renshuu will help your Japanese by putting it into use in ways such as talking with others and playing games. The most important part about learning a language is having enough interaction with it. This is not a formal Japanese class, but will have class-like aspects to the meetings such as a teaching segment. This program is meant to help with your Japanese studies.

    Location Details

The location will be in the Student Lounge (room 133) of the International Center, located on the Lakefront Campus of the University of New Orleans (UNO). For an interactive map, go to http://www.uno.edu/about/campus-maps/lakefront-campus.aspx. Click on “International Center” on the left menu to see the location of the building. For a PDF map of campus, go to http://www.uno.edu/about/documents/lakefront-campus-2014.pdf and look for building #18. Park in the lot on the west side of the building, and enter the glass door on the west side of the building (near the big air conditioning equipment). Because this event takes place after hours, the main (front) entry will be locked. For assistance, contact Jennifer Torres at jgaudet09@yahoo.com.

    • Sun, October 08, 2017
    • 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
    • Tubby and Coo's Mid-City Book Shop

For the month of October, we'll be reading and discussing Volume 1 of the The Twelve Kingdoms series by Fuyumi Ono. This fantasy series will be the first venture into light novels for the JSNO Kwaidan Book Club. (There is a companion anime to the series that we highly recommend, for those interested).

We will be specifically covering material from the TokyoPop edition of The Twelve Kingdoms Volume 1 (Book of Shadow). This is the only existing English version of the series and while it is out of print, you can currently find it on Amazon (ISBN-13: 978-1427802576); used copies are reasonably priced.

This is a Japanese fantasy series that blends both Japanese and Chinese mythology and tradition.

    ABOUT THE BOOK:
Yoko Nakajimas life has been fairly ordinary--until a golden-haired man appears to tell her that she is his master and must return to their kingdom. With the help of a magic sword and a magic stone against the demons on her trail, Yoko begins her quest for both survival and self-discovery.

More than just a fantasy story filled with horrific monsters, half-beasts, and magicians, The Twelve Kingdoms centers around a world reminiscent of Chinese Mythology and rife with civil and political upheaval. Sea of Shadow, the first volume of this seven-volume epic, takes you on a wild ride that leaves you questioning the bounds of reality and fantasy.

    (From School Library Journal)
Yoko is an ordinary high school girl with nightmares when a golden-haired young man tells her she's in dream-foreshadowed danger. Soon the teen is flying on the back of a huge bird to a kingdom in another world, where she'll eventually learn that she is destined for a throne. The prominence of a jewel and a sword (as well as purification by water) connects this tale to Japanese tradition. Chinese tradition contributes cosmography and the Mandate of Heaven. Anime tradition guarantees lots of bloody monster-killing by the reluctant (and imperfect) Yoko.

For the month of November, we will be reading and discussing Out by Natsuo Kirino. This grim crime novel won Japan's top mystery award, the Grand Prix, and will be Kwaidan's first foray into the genre!

*Please help support Tubby & Coo's Mid-City Book Shop by ordering your copy through them. Make sure to mention that it is for the Kwaidan Book Club (Japan Society of New Orleans's Book Club) for a special discount!

    ABOUT THE BOOK:
Nothing in Japanese literature prepares us for the stark, tension-filled, plot-driven realism of Natsuo Kirino’s award-winning literary mystery Out .

This mesmerizing novel tells the story of a brutal murder in the staid Tokyo suburbs, as a young mother who works the night shift making boxed lunches strangles her abusive husband and then seeks the help of her coworkers to dispose of the body and cover up her crime. The coolly intelligent Masako emerges as the plot’s ringleader, but quickly discovers that this killing is merely the beginning, as it leads to a terrifying foray into the violent underbelly of Japanese society.

At once a masterpiece of literary suspense and pitch-black comedy of gender warfare, Out is also a moving evocation of the pressures and prejudices that drive women to extreme deeds, and the friendships that bolster them in the aftermath.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Natsuo Kirino, born in 1951, quickly established a reputation in her own country as one of a rare breed of mystery writer whose work goes well beyond the conventional crime novel. This fact has been demonstrated by her winning not only the Grand Prix for Crime Fiction in Japan–for Out in 1998–but one of its major literary awards–the Naoki Prize in 1999, for Soft Cheeks (to be published in English). Several of her books have also been turned into full-scale movies.

Out is the first of her novels to appear in English and was nominated for an Edgar Award. Natsuo Kirino lives in Japan.
