    • Thu, April 27, 2017
    • 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
    • UNO International Center

Membership to Japan Society of New Orleans is required to attend, as this is a members only program. Nihongo Renshuu will meet every second and fourth Thursday of the month from 7:00-8:00pm.

    Thursday, April 27th, 2017 Meeting

At the first meeting of the month we introduced foods and practiced ordering in Japanese. Now we're going to see how quick your vocabulary reflexes are with a game. Make sure to study up on your food vocabulary we learned as you'll have to "guess that food" for this game.

    About Nihongo Renshuu

Nihongo Renshuu, or Japanese practice, is a casual learning experience for people wanting to learn Japanese. It’s easy to grab material to study but not so easy when it comes to practicing what you’ve studied. This program is for all Japanese learning levels, from beginner to expert. The reason for the large gap is how this program is formatted. Nihongo Renshuu will help your Japanese by putting it into use in ways such as talking with others and playing games. The most important part about learning a language is having enough interaction with it. This is not a formal Japanese class, but will have class-like aspects to the meetings such as a teaching segment. This program is meant to help with your Japanese studies.

    Location Details

The location will be in the Student Lounge (room 133) of the International Center, located on the Lakefront Campus of the University of New Orleans (UNO). For an interactive map, go to http://www.uno.edu/about/campus-maps/lakefront-campus.aspx. Click on “International Center” on the left menu to see the location of the building. For a PDF map of campus, go to http://www.uno.edu/about/documents/lakefront-campus-2014.pdf and look for building #18. Park in the lot on the west side of the building, and enter the glass door on the west side of the building (near the big air conditioning equipment). Because this event takes place after hours, the main (front) entry will be locked. For assistance, contact Jennifer Torres at jgaudet09@yahoo.com.

    Thursday, May 11th, 2017 Meeting

We've had a great first half of the year of learning Japanese and practicing it with one another. I always recommend to go home and get some input Japanese since our meetings focus on the output. Well, in case you're not getting enough input we will be watching a Japanese game show. Hopefully you'll pick up some helpful phrases while watching.

This is also acting as a reward for those of you who have been working hard with your Japanese studies. We'll be taking a summer break and starting back up in August.

BOOK CLUB IS MEETING LATER THAN USUAL THIS MONTH ON SUNDAY, MAY 21ST. Extra time to read! :)

"Silence I regard as a masterpiece, a lucid and elegant drama." -The New York Review of Books

For the month of May, Kwaidan Book Club will be reading and discussing "Silence" by Shūsaku Endō, a classic novel of enduring faith in dangerous times. "Silence" was recently made into a motion pictured directed by Martin Scorsese. We will be screening the movie immediately before the club meeting and book discussion.

Movie Screening: 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM (movie running time is 2 hours and 41 minutes)

Book Club Meeting: 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM

*Please help support Tubby & Coo's Mid-City Book Shop by ordering your copy through them. Make sure to mention that it is for the Kwaidan Book Club (Japan Society of New Orleans's Book Club) for a special discount!

    ABOUT THE BOOK:

Seventeenth-century Japan: Two Portuguese Jesuit priests travel to a country hostile to their religion, where feudal lords force the faithful to publicly renounce their beliefs. Eventually captured and forced to watch their Japanese Christian brothers lay down their lives for their faith, the priests bear witness to unimaginable cruelties that test their own beliefs. Shūsaku Endō is one of the most celebrated and well-known Japanese fiction writers of the twentieth century, and Silence is widely considered to be his great masterpiece.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

Shūsaku Endō (March 27, 1923 – September 29, 1996) was a Japanese author who wrote from the rare perspective of a Japanese Roman Catholic. Born in Tokyo in 1923, Endō was raised by his mother and an aunt in Kobe where he converted to Roman Catholicism at the age of eleven. At Tokyo's Keio University he majored in French literature, graduating BA in 1949, before furthering his studies in French Catholic literature at the University of Lyon in France between 1950 and 1953. A major theme running through his books, which have been translated into many languages, including English, French, Russian and Swedish, is the failure of Japanese soil to nurture the growth of Christianity. Before his death in 1996, Endō was the recipient of a number of outstanding Japanese literary awards: the Akutagawa Prize, Mainichi Cultural Prize, Shincho Prize, and Tanizaki Prize.

Learn how to wear kimono right here in NOLA at our special 2 hour May Nihongo Bin meeting!

The kimono is synonymous with Japan, an art form that has captivated the West since the country opened its borders in the late 19th century and Japanism swept across the world. If you've ever wanted to learn about kimono and kitsuke (the art of wearing kimono), come join us for a Kimono and Kitsuke Workshop and Demonstration at May's Nihongo Bin!

The presentation and kitsuke demonstration will be led by local author and JSNO member, Eva Vanrell.
