    • Thu, October 18, 2018
    • 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
    • Old Metairie Branch Library

Come join us at our new location for the "semester", the Old Metairie Branch Library! At this meeting we will focus on learning Japanese hiragana. Knowing the basic alphabet of the Japanese language will help broaden your Japanese learning. We'll reinforce this learning with a game of hiragana poker.

Nihongo Renshuu, or Japanese practice, is a casual learning experience for people wanting to learn Japanese. It’s easy to grab material to study but not so easy when it comes to practicing what you’ve studied. This program is for all Japanese learning levels, from beginner to expert. The reason for the large gap is how this program is formatted. Nihongo Renshuu will help your Japanese by putting it into use in ways such as talking with others and playing games. The most important part about learning a language is having enough interaction with it. This is not a formal Japanese class, but will have class-like aspects to the meetings such as a teaching segment. This program is meant to help with your Japanese studies, not be the main source of study.

    • Mon, October 22, 2018
    • 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM
    • Old Metairie Branch Library

Nihongo Bin is a program where we explore different aspects of the Japanese culture and lifestyle.

Planning to travel to Japan one day? Whether if it's in the near or far future, this meeting will help you plan out your travels to Japan, budget your trip and give you helpful travel advice. There will even be an opportunity for you to ask your specific travel questions. Be prepared to travel to Japan!

This program is free to attend and open to the public, so bring a friend! The presentation will be led by Jennifer Torres, Japan Society of New Orleans board member and blogger for Japan Therapy.

    • Thu, October 25, 2018
    • 6:30 PM - 8:30 PM
    • University of New Orleans, Milneburg Hall, Rm 179

Despite lingering wartime enmity, tens of thousands of Japanese wives -- the biggest influx of Asian women in U.S. history -- crossed the Pacific. They began new lives in difficult and to them mysterious circumstances, scattered across the country in places where they were often the first Japanese ever seen. What was it like to abandon family, friends and country, and marry a former enemy? Even for those whose choice of spouse proved to be a tragic mistake, there was no turning back. Many in Japan viewed them as social outcasts and even today the words "war bride" in Japanese carry such a stigma -- of bar girls, even prostitution --  that people don't like to say them. Now these women are in their 80s. This is their story, of lives shaped by one irrevocable decision.

Please come and view this FREE viewing and open discussion with Director Kathryn Tolbert.  See below for a map of the campus, see Testing Services dialog bubble, this event is in Milneburg Hall.

Another map is available through this link:  Map of UNO Campus

Free parking is available on campus.

This is event is funded by a grant from the Japan Foundation New York Center for Global Partnership.

    • 4:00 PM - 6:00 PM
    • Tubby & Coo's Mid-City Book Shop

“Soseki is the representative modern Japanese novelist, a figure of truly national stature.”                                                                                                     —Haruki Murakami

For the month of November, we will be reading and discussing “Kokoro” by Natsume Sōseki, the great Japanese modern novel.

*Please help support Tubby & Coo's Mid-City Book Shop by ordering your copy through them. Make sure to mention that it is for the Kwaidan Book Club (Japan Society of New Orleans's Book Club) for a special discount!

    ABOUT THE BOOK:
No collection of Japanese literature is complete without Natsume Soseki's "Kokoro," his most famous novel and the last he completed before his death. Published here in the first new translation in more than fifty years, Kokoro—meaning "heart"—is the story of a subtle and poignant friendship between two unnamed characters, a young man and an enigmatic elder whom he calls "Sensei." Haunted by tragic secrets that have cast a long shadow over his life, Sensei slowly opens up to his young disciple, confessing indiscretions from his own student days that have left him reeling with guilt, and revealing, in the seemingly unbridgeable chasm between his moral anguish and his student's struggle to understand it, the profound cultural shift from one generation to the next that characterized Japan in the early twentieth century.

    ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
NATSUME SŌSEKI (1867-1916), one of Japan's most influential modern writers, is widely considered the foremost novelist of the Meiji era (1868-1914) and a master of psychological fiction. As well as his works of fiction, his essays, haiku, and kanshi have been influential and are popular even today. .

    ABOUT THE TRANSLATOR:
MEREDITH MCKINNEY (translator) holds a PhD in medieval Japanese literature from the University in Canberra, where she teaches in the Japan Centre. She lived and taught in Japan for twenty years and now lives near Braidwood, New South Wales. Her other translations include Ravine and Other Stories, The Tale of Saigyo, and for Penguin Classics, The Pillow Book of Sei Shonagon, and Kusamakura.
